The excuses made up by the wife of Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) president Abdullah Zaik Abd Rahman, Nor Saleha Mohd Salleh, that her husband is a community hero for calling Chinese as intruders, has further insulted the Chinese community.
It is regrettable to see Nor Saleha, as a wife and a woman of today, unable to differentiate truth and falsity. A modern woman should be independent minded and rectified those inappropriate remarks of her husband, instead of rendering him blind support. But she further said that charging her husband in court was an attempt to refrain him from telling the truth. As a lecturer of Selangor International Islamic University, I am worried for the students taking her course, how she can guide the students to see the truth?
Her husband's remark has insulted the feelings of the Chinese community, a fact which she might have omitted while defending her husband. As such, I wonder whether or not she would have a change of perspective in her views should someone make similar discriminatory remarks to the Malay community. How would she react then? She even asked the Chinese press do they felt humiliate by the Malay? Do they want to go back to China?
It is a historical fact that most of the ancestors of the people in Malaysia were immigrants hundreds years ago. My grandfather came from Southern China a hundred years ago to do business and resided here; subsequently my parents, my children and I were all born on this land.
Thus, I would like to ask Nor Saleha where and when did her husband and her ancestors came from? How many generations have they resided at the peninsula? Malaysia is a multiracial country and I advise this husband-and-wife team to re-study their national history.
An extremist is never a community hero, especially when the borders between nations are diminishing. Such remarks only expose their lack of thought and shallow minds.
Finally, I must praise the Attorney-General for taking prompt action in dealing with those who fan racial sentiment.
