Gov't wants Surendran suspended, again

The government has moved to suspend PKR's Padang Serai MP N Surendran for six months once again, days after he returned from a suspension meted out in November last year.

A motion by the government was found on the tables of members of Parliament in the Dewan Rakyat this afternoon.

The motion is related to Surendran's press conference on Monday, at which he criticised speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia for stifling the opposition's voice in Parliament.

The first-term MP was suspended from Parliament for six months, on similar grounds, last year.

Ever since becoming an MP, Surendran has made it his forte to question parliamentary conventions and the conduct of the speaker among others, including comparing the Dewan Rakyat with the Zimbabwe Parliament.

His statements have constantly irked Pandikar, who has repeatedly said that any grouses with his decisions in the House should be put in the form of a motion against him and not through press conferences.

The move could trigger a massive debate amidst a heated atmosphere in the House tomorrow.

Back in November, Pakatan MPs made paper planes out of the motion paper to suspend Surendran (left) as he was ejected amidst high drama in the House.

Even if all Pakatan MPs attend the sitting tomorrow to vote against the motion, they are likely to be outnumbered by BN MPs.

There are 134 BN MPs in the House to the Opposition’s 88 MPs.
