KJ sees red over 'non-bumi' job ad

Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has highlighted a job advertisement, which states that the firm prefers a non-bumiputera for the post of production engineer.

He initially uploaded what is believed to be a doctored version of the original advertisement on his Twitter account, where it was stated: "Strictly non-bumiputera would be selected and we encourage them to apply."

"If this advertisement is true, then it is an example of discrimination at the workplace. I have raised this before, but many denied it," he added.

After being alerted by another Twitter user, Khairy uploaded the original advertisement, posted onJobstreet.com.

In the original version, the advertisement stated: "Preferably non-bumiputera encourage (sic) to apply."

After having re-tweeted the original advertisement, Khairy, who is also youth and sports minister, said: "Well, the actual ad isn't much better."

The advertisement was for a vacancy in the firm's plant in Tikam Batu, Kedah.

The minister's posting drew a slew of responses, with some pointing out that such advertisements were common.

Among others, Twitter user "The Hajime" wrote: "Banyak je iklan 'mandarin speaking’ is an advantage." (There are many job advertisements where it is stated that speaking Mandarin is an advantage).

During the last Umno general assembly, Khairy had criticised non-bumiputera companies that discriminated against bumiputeras in terms of pay and recruitment.

The Umno Youth chief had based his claims on two studies by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Universiti Malaya.

"According to the studies, although they met the grade in terms of merits and qualifications, they do not get a fair deal.

"There are cases where they get lower salaries compared with other workers with similar abilities and qualifications.

"What is even sadder is that we constantly see advertisements for work that clearly state their preference for one community and marginalise others," he had added.

Among others, MCA Wanita chief Heng Seai Kie took Khairy to task over this matter, telling him and other Umno politicians to stop spewing illogical rhetoric to gain political mileage.
