‘Let Felda settlers hand over petition’

Padang Serai MP N Surendran says the petitioners have the right to voice out their grievances at Parliament.
felda02KUALA LUMPUR: Some 3,015 Felda settlers are heading to Parliament on Wednesday to hand over a petition – and Padang Serai MP N Surendran urged the police not to stop them.
“The people are allowed to petition Parliament regarding the problems they face… the MPs are just serving as their mouthpiece.
“This is the first time such a large number of people (from all over the country) are coming to Parliament to voice out their grievances.
“These people cannot be blocked from coming in… they have every right to have their petition read on the floor and recorded in the Dewan Rakyat,” he said.
Surendran will hand over the petition to the Parliament’s secretary’s office.
One of the Felda settlers’ main demands is the right to sell their oil palm tree produce to the highest bidder.
Despite being legitimate landowners, the settlers are forced to sell their produce to only Felda-owned factories, which are often at a low price.
Besides Surendran, the other three MPs helping the settlers submit their petition are Subang MP R Sivarasa, Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin and Alor Setar MP Gooi Hsiao Leung.
