No action against 'torch HQ' mob irks DAP

DAP has filed a report with the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) with regard to the police investigation concerning the Umno Youth protest outside the DAP headquarters.

Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng accused the police of breaching the standard operating procedure (SOP).

"Fourteen days after the arrest, the case should have been forwarded to the attorney general to press charges.

"But today is the 14th day, and no action seems to have taken place," he told reporters when met at Putrajaya.

"Under the SOP, if there is any report made, police will make arrests, handcuff the suspects and put them in the lockup for at least one night but why not in this case. They were merely questioned and allowed bail," said Lim.

Should not have been freed on bail

According to him, the protesters had committed at least four criminal offences under the Penal Code and they should not have been freed on bail.

"One of the more serious offences in this case is their open threat to burn down the DAP headquarters, which can be investigated under Section 436 of the Penal Code," said Lim, adding that if found guilty, an offender can be slapped with a 20-year prison term.

On May 26, policedetained six Umno Youth leaders in connection with theprotest four days earlier, where threats were made to torch the DAP headquarters.

Those arrested include Federal Territories Umno Youth chief Mohd Razlan Muhammad Rafii, Cheras Umno Youth chief Johari Yazid, Federal Territories Umno information chief Ghulam Muzaffar and Bandar Tun Razak Umno Youth chief Rizalman Mokhtar.

They were released later after their statements were recorded. The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.

Meanwhile, Lim claimed that the police had also breached the SOP by failing to call witnesses to identify the suspects.

"Therefore, DAP believes there might be intervention from higher authorities," he added.

Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun, who was also present, said the police should not practice double standards and need to be transparent in their investigation.

The Umno Youth members had protested against DAP Seri Delima assemblyperson RSN Rayer, who described certain Umno leaders as "celaka".

The party's signboard was torn down as a result of the chaos.
