No ties with 'membership for land' scheme, says IPF

The Indian Progressive Front (IPF) has denied involvement in an alleged membership-for-land scheme targeting Indian Malaysian voters in Teluk Intan.

The forms were allegedly distributed by IPF campaigners in their door-to-door visits during the Teluk Intan by-election campaign.

The forms read, “I would like to apply to be an IPF Malaysia member under the leadership of MV Mathiyalagan and to apply for ‘agriculture land’ plan.”

However, the IPF said in a statement today that Mathiyalagan is no longer an IPF member.

Bernama had reported last year that the Registrar of Societies (ROS) recognises M Sambanthan as the party’s leader, following a leadership crisis between him and Mathiyalagan.

“Please correct the source of your news as we are in process of taking legal action to safeguard our image and reputation and a few police reports have been already made on that individual.

“Mathiyalagan is an ex-IPF member who has been sacked from our party and we have won case against him recently,” the party said, referring to a Malaysiakini report on May 30, on the alleged scheme.

Malaysiakini had at that time made attempts to contact IPF to verify the alleged membership-for-land scheme and the authenticity of the documents, but was unable to reach the party for comment.

Further attempts to contact the party today for details about its denial was also unsuccessful.
