KUALA LUMPUR― Federal and state lawmakers are not protected from charges under the Sedition Act for remarks uttered in Parliament or in state legislative assemblies, a government minister said today.
His remark comes after news that a DAP assemblyman would be charged with sedition for saying “Umno celaka” (Damn Umno) in the Penang state assembly.
“You can't run away from the Sedition Act in Dewan,” Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim told reporters at the sidelines of the opening of the World Scout Bureau office here today.
Asked if it was a crime to insult a political party, Shahidan appeared to suggest that Umno is more than just a party.
“Umno represents the Malays,” he said. - Malay Mail
