“As we all know, there were numerous occasions where Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais), under the direction of Mais, has sidestepped the Pakatan...government and made unilateral decisions, affecting not only the state government's image but Selangorians in general,” he said in a statement today.
“It is utterly ridiculous that Mais has so much power that it can ignore the state government's directives and advise which pays for its operations.”
Change legislation
Describing it as the “best time” to review Mais and Jais’ powers, the DAP assemblyperson for Kota Alam Shah said that there is need to “reshuffle the legislation” in order to solve this problem.
“Owing to the fact that Mais reports directly to His Highness, the Selangor sultan, I would recommend that the state government hold discussions with representatives from the palace, state government, Mais and minority groups to iron out better policies to protect the interest of both Muslims and non-Muslims in the state,” he said.
Mais and the Jais face criticism for defying state government and the attorney-general’s (AG) advise by refusing to return 321 seized copies of the Bible.
The holy books were taken from the Bible Society of Malaysia during a raid at its Petaling Jaya premise in January.
Sultan Sharafudin Idris Shah last week told Jais to bring the matter of whether to return the bibles to court, following the AG’sannouncement that the case is closed without prosecution.
Khalid said the state will comply with the sultan's instructions.
