Zul: 'Allah' decision justifies Bible seizure

The Federal Court decision has justified the Selangor Islamic Religious Department’s (Jais) action to seize copies of the bible in Malay and Iban languages, said former Perkasa vice-president Zulkifli Noordin today.

He was referring to the apex court's decision this morning not to grant leave to Catholic weekly The Herald's appeal to use the word Allah in its Malay publications.

Zulkifli, a lawyer by profession, said Jais and its parent body, Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais), can refer to the Court of Appeal judgement regarding this case, which is now final and binding.

"The Court of Appeal judgement had wide implications, and generally speaks about the usage of Allah among non-Muslims.

"It is what we call obiter. So what Jais and Mais did was right," he told reporters after briefly attending a Perkasa rally at the Palace of Justice today.

He said the right thing to do with the 321 bibles, seized from the Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM) in January, would be to obtain a court order to "dispose" them.

"This basically means the Selangor Non Islamic Religion (Control of Propagation among Muslims) Enactment of 1988 stands," he added.

Zulkifli, however, dismissed fears that the enactment barring the use of the word Allah by non-Muslims would means Selangorians can't sing the state anthem, among others.

"Section 9 of the enactment clearly states that Allah should be used for purposes that is different than how Muslims treat it.

"There is no issue with the anthem and what not. The problem is when (Christians) attempt to use it for reasons how Muslims refer it to," he said.
