Malaysians are suffering in flood-stricken areas all over the country while a headless Putrajaya dithers and offers lame responses, said an opposition lawmaker.
DAP national publicity chief Tony Pua said both the Cabinet and National Security Council should get their act together and help the flood victims.
He said more than 100,000 Malaysians, the highest figure in Malaysia's history, have so far been displaced by the floods in five states nationwide.
He said Najib needed to “beat” the Cabinet and NSC into shape until the flood disaster had been resolved.
Yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said that there was no need for Najib to return as he was in charge and there was nothing to worry about.
"Muhyiddin's lame response yesterday proves that we have a headless government," Pua said.
"There is no urgent, cohesive and proactive response to the increasing chaos with more reports of new flood zones cropping up in Malaysia.”
Pua asked how Malaysians were supposed to have trust and faith in Muhyiddin if he was only meeting the NSC tomorrow.
He said International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed had admitted to weaknesses in Putrajaya's flood operations.
Mustapa, the Umno Kelantan chief, was reported by Astro Awani as saying that although preparations on paper were smooth, the reality was different.
Mustapa said the floods which hit Kelantan had resulted in certain obstacles and problems cropping up which could not be resolved.
"In coordinating a natural disaster of this magnitude, quick and precise instructions have to be issued by an experienced leader.
"We must have a commander who is capable of handling several departments simultaneously," Mustapa told reporters in Kuala Krai today.
Pua said Muhyiddin had refused to declare a state of emergency to enable and coordinate large scale mobilisation of available government machinery to help resolve and mitigate the disaster.
Furthermore, he said, Muhyiddin did not see any urgency to crack the whip on the NSC.
"Every member of the NSC should be available at a moment’s notice to attend an emergency meeting to update and discuss plans to manage the massive woes facing the rakyat.
"Given the scale of the crisis, NSC should be meeting on a daily basis to cope with managing and directing the gigantic government bureaucracy," Pua said.
"It proves the complete failure of the government when the NSC has not met despite the rapidly worsening flood crisis which started not yesterday but nearly two weeks ago."
