Khairy to foreign govts: Stay out of Anwar’s case

UMNO Youth Chief says it is unacceptable if a two-way relationship between Malaysia and the US is based on a court case.
stayoutPETALING JAYA: UMNO Youth Chief Khairy Jamaluddin today responded to a petition created on a White House website, in the wake of Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy conviction, by stating that any interference of foreign powers in the Malaysian judiciary was not welcomed.
The petition, initiated by former United States Ambassador to Malaysia John Mallot, urged Washington to make the imprisoned opposition leader’s liberation a top priority and the basis of Malaysia’s diplomatic relationship with the US.
Taking to Facebook, Khairy posted, “Even though that petition cannot be halted since it is a democratic practice in America, we (Malaysian government) would like to emphasise that we decline any foreign interference in our internal administration.
Khairy also said the government rejected any notion that the outcome of a case tried in a Malaysian court would be made as the basis of a two-way relationship between Malaysia and the US.
“All efforts to make Anwar Ibrahim’s case a bilateral issue by the American government will be considered an effort to meddle in our internal affairs and violate our country’s sovereignty,” he said.
He also cautioned Malaysians against prompting any other foreign administration to pressure the Malaysian government regarding the matter.
Khairy reminded Anwar’s supporters they were free to stand in solidarity with their leader, both in the court and at the gates of Sungai Buloh prison if they so wished.
“The political parties who have pledged their support to Anwar Ibrahim (are) free to compete in the upcoming general election.
“The democratic platform is always open to anyone who wants to champion Anwar’s cause,” said Khairy and added, “but don’t ever request the interference from foreign administrations that would violate our dignity, freedom and sovereignty.”
Anwar was found guilty of sodomy Tuesday and sentenced by the court to five years in prison.
