GEORGE TOWN - A robber fired a few shots before carting off half a million ringgit from the van of a security company outside a bank in Jalan Mahsuri, Bayan Baru, here today.
The robbers arrived at the scene on a motorcycle bearing a fake registration number plates and were seen loitering there for some time.
State CID Chief Datuk Mazlan Kesah, who was at the scene, said about 11am security guards began transferring two bags of money from the bank into the security van.
One bag contained RM300,000 and the other RM500,000.
Mazlan said one of the robbers, riding pillion, approached the van as the door was being opened for the guards to enter.
He pointed a gun at one of the guards carrying two bags of cash.
He kicked the guard’s feet until the latter lost his balance, and fled with the bags.
Mazlan said one of the bank’s guards fired four shots at the gunman, injuring him in the right leg.
“The gunman’s accomplice, who witnessed the shooting, then fled on his motorcycle.
“His wounded friend managed to run across the road, about 130 metres towards a residential area nearby.
“We have recovered the other bag, containing RM300,000, which the robbers left behind in a scrap metal shop nearby,” added Mazlan.
He said police would view the closed circuit television camera (CCTV) footage to identify the suspects.
Mazlan said before the incident, the same group of security guards had collected cash from another bank nearby.
The robbers were believed to have tailed them to the other bank before staging the robbery, he said.
“We will study the standard operating procedures (SOP) of the security firm regarding their method of cash collection and their level of security.” - http://www.therakyatpost.com/
