Putrajaya has yet to pay Umno lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, the RM1,000 for his services as deputy public prosecutor (DPP) in the second sodomy trial of Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, revealed de facto law minister Nancy Shukri.
She said this was because Shafee had yet to bill the Attorney General Chambers (AGC). The contract to hire Shafee in the case was done between the lawyer and the AGC.
"The RM1,000 was agreed upon by both parties and payment will be made in accordance to government's procedures which states that the money will be paid within 14 days of receiving the invoice.
The minister in the prime minister's department had told Parliament two weeks ago that Shafee was picked by Putrajaya based on his experience as a former DPP, his expertise in handling criminal cases and as a defence lawyer – all seen as added value in the government's prosecution of Anwar.
The payment of RM1,000 was disclosed after both the AGC and Shafee had agreed to making it public, she had said. Nancy said Shafee's contract ended after the case ended.
"What he did was on his own account and the government is not behind it," she said in reply to a question from Gobind Singh Deo (DAP – Puchong) regarding the series of roadshows Shafee had participated in where he revealed salacious details that purportedly took place between Anwar and his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.
She maintained that Putrajaya only conducted one closed door event to explain the case to the people.
Anwar failed to get his sodomy conviction overturned by the Federal Court, which on February 10 upheld the appellate court's guilty verdict and five-year jail sentence.
He was charged with sodomising Mohd Saiful in 2008.
Anwar is still an MP as his family has appealed to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for a pardon.
