STOP BEING CHILDISH, you're a cop not Raja Twitter - student group slams IGP
Since the 2013 General Elections, more than 60 people have either been arrested, detained, charged or convicted under the Sedition Act 1948 and Peaceful Assembly Act 2012. Mahasiswa Ganyang strongly denounces this attempt to silence dissidents and criticisms. It is a clear violation of Article 10 of the Federal Constitution which gurantess freedom of speech, assembly and association.
The IGP in recent weeks has through Twitter urged the Royal Malaysian Police Force to investigate critics such as Zulkiflee Anwar Haque (Zunar) and Eric Paulsen, and even elected representatives like YB Tony Pua and YB Rafizi Ramli for expressing their concerns over current issues. His feats have reached new heights yesterday, with a probe into a tweet by Michelle Yesudas, who expressed her worries over the many rapists in the country.
It appears to the public that the IGP has decided to dictate what can or cannot be said online, to the point of likening himself to a social media ‘referee’. We would like to remind the IGP that there are two types of referees- the corrupted one and the fair one. In any sports, a strict referee is feared, but one that has integrity will always be respected by the spectators.
IGP Khalid
The freedom to voice opinions online must be protected. Contrary to this spirit, the IGP is using Twitter to issue threats of police investigation against netizens. The IGP needs to be reminded that it is not a crime to criticise or question authorities or government agencies such as JAKIM, the police force and the judiciary. It is an integral part of a democracy and a right enshrined under the Federal Constitution.
Last week, the IGP made a number of statements defending his harassment on Twitter and admitted he is targeting politicians and NGO leaders with large numbers of followers. This seems to suggest that the IGP is actig on the orders of UMNO cybertroopers, even without proper verification, as was the case with a fabricated tweet implicating the Penang Deputy Chief Minister P. Ramasamy.

With respect to these, Mahasiswa Ganyang demands that the IGP respect Article 132 of the Federal Constitution. The police force though under the purview of the UMNO government, is part of the public service. The IGP and those under his command must carry out their duties impartially and professionally instead of targeting dissidents and critics.
Yesterday, more than 70 anti-GST protestors were arrested at the Customs Department at Kelana Jaya. In what was an initial peaceful demand for the Director to answer questions about the GST, a scuffle broke out when Light Strike Force personels began hauling up the protestors. A few of them even sustained injuries as a result of punches and kicks by the police force. The dozens who were forced to stay the night in lockup were not only denied visit by family members, but also denied legal counsel.
We urge the IGP to respect Article 5(3) of the Federal Constitution, which gurantees every arrested person legal consultation by a practitioner of his/her choice. With regards to the assault and police brutality, an investigation has to be accorded and the IGP must be held responsible.
It is very clear that the IGP is wasting time policing Twitterjaya and abusing the laws of the land instead of fighting crimes on the street. - MAILBAG
