An Umno minister said there was freedom of speech in Malaysia because people could still criticise the prime minister's wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Malaysiakini reported.
The news portal quoted Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan telling youths at a students' conference in Kuala Lumpur that they still had freedom to talk about "almost anything" in this country.
"Is there freedom of speech in the country? I think there is. What (is it that) you want to talk about that you can't?
"You can even talk about the wife of the prime minister, and Rosmah has not done anything to you (in retaliation)," the Kota Belud MP was quoted as saying.
From his Twitter feed which carried excerpts of his speech, Rahman also said that the Malaysian government embraced the internet "in the name of freedom of expression".
"(This is) despite receiving malicious attacks on this platform," the minister said at the “What Youth Should Know” conference on the topic of moderation, youth empowerment and education.
His comments on free speech come as police are conducting a sweep of opposition politicians and activists ahead of the #KitaLawan street protest this afternoon.
The protest is being held to call for opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's release from jail where he is serving a sentence for sodomy, and for prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's resignation, as well as to protest the goods and services tax (GST).
Rallies are allowed under the Peaceful Assembly Act but under certain conditions, and the police have branded today's gathering as illegal.
Rosmah has been a target of criticism for reportedly lavish spending habits and has been accused of using government facilities, such as the prime minister's personal jet, for shopping trips.
A February report by The New York Times on foreign investors of luxury properties in Manhattan mentioned her in connection with Malaysian businessman Low Taek Jho, and said it had obtained receipts of luxury purchases as proof of her spending.
