PKR wants share of power to vote out Najib

Conditions set: to be part of a transition government, and immediate press and electoral reforms

KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Keadilan Rakyat has committed its 20 MPs to vote against Prime Minister Najib Razak, if the party is part of a transition government to take over with immediate effect media, electoral and economic reforms to be carried out.
PKR demanded that a transition government be formed until the next general election which must be held by 2018
The transition government must comprise members of both the Barisan Nasional and the opposition, and must carry out immediate reforms for free elections, free the media, strengthen parliamentary democracy, and take measures on the economy.
They called for an emergency economic committee to be set up to deal with the weakening ringgit, the Goods and Services Tax, increased living costs, and to deal with crony capitalism.
An independent royal commission must also be formed immediately to fully implement the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
In a joint statement today, the 20 MPs said they would work with all members of Parliament irrespective of party to support a no-confidence motion against Najib in the Dewan Rakyat.
A confidence motion needs 112 votes to be carried by a simple majority of the 222-member House. Barisan Nasional commands 132 seats in the Dewan Rakyat, of which Umno have 88 and the non-Umno parties 44. The combined opposition and independent members make up the rest.
The PKR decision comes after months of campaigning by opposition politicians for a confidence vote and for a new coalition of MPs to form a government after voting out Najib and his cabinet.
Last week, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad finally declared support for a confidence motion after leading a campaign all year to force Najib out of office as Umno president and prime minister.
The PKR statement was jointly signed by Nurul Izzah Anwar (Lembah Pantai); Rafizi Ramli (Pandan); Tian Chua (Batu); Sivarasa Rasiah (Subang); Zuraida Kamaruddin (Ampang); Lee Boon Chye (Gopeng); Johari Abdul (Sungai Petani); Darell Leiking (Penampang); Fuziah Salleh (Kuantan); Sim Tze Tzin (Bayan Baru); Dr Tan Kee Kwong (Wangsa Maju); Mohd Imran Abdul Hamid (Lumut); Wong Chen (Kelana Jaya); William Leong (Selayang); Fauzi Abdul Rahman (Indera Mahkota); Dr Michael Teo Yu Keng (Miri); Dr Azman Ismail (Kuala Kedah); Manivanan Gowin (Kapar); Hee Loy Sian (Petaling Jaya Selatan); and Gooi Hsiao Leung (Alor Setar).
They said they felt duty bound to support the confidence motion if it is tabled in the House “in order to restore democracy and the moral integrity and independence of our public institutions”.
