PETALING JAYA: Cheras Umno chief Syed Ali Alhabshee has told the government to revoke NTV7’s broadcasting licence as punishment for airing a programme in which he said the government and the country’s leaders were insulted.
In a press statement, Syed Ali referred to a recent broadcasting of a Chinese-language talk show in which there was a discussion about a United Nations session attended by US President Barack Obama, Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jia Bao, Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe and Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak.
The show is called “Edition.”
Syed Ali said one of the panelists quoted quips by Mugabe that were insulting to the Malaysian government.
He quoted the panelist as saying, “Robert Mugabe had a quiz for the other three leaders. Among his questions were, ‘Which country lost an aircraft engine without going to war? Which country used up US$10 million to build 50 1Malaysia clinics but didn’t have the doctors? In which country did a stadium collapse although there was no earthquake? Unfortunately, this all happened in Malaysia.’”
Syed Ali said it was clear that the panelist was attempting to disgrace the government and Malaysian leaders.
He said NTV7 “should have been more responsible” and not allow the panelist to raise issues that were “frivolous and with no other intention than to instil in the public a hatred towards the government.”
He noted that the audience gave a resounding applause to the panelist. He said it gave the impression that the members of the audience believed the government was weak and that its policies caused hardship among the public.
