Kurup: Sabahans oppose Project IC

PBRS president calls for quick action on problem of illegal immgrants.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabahans are opposed to Project IC (where illegal immigrants were speedily given identity cards and citizenship to qualify them as voters), a federal minister said today.

Joseph Kurup, who is president of Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah, said the influx of illegal immigrants into Sabah was a national issue which required concerted efforts to solve.

He said the issue of illegal immigrants in Sabah was also the biggest and most complex problem, for which the cooperation of all parties concerned was needed to analyse and hence overcome it.

Speaking at his party’s convention today, he thanked the prime minister Najib Razak for setting up the Royal Commission of Inquiry on the problem of illegal Immigrants in Sabah to propose solutions.

Kurup, a minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, said the issue of illegal immigrants should be resolved fast as it gave rise to social and economic divide, besides dissatisfaction among locals towards the illegals.

He said PBRS’ stand and struggle in this matter, as well as the Sabah people’s, were clear in opposing Project IC.

“We are not against migration to Sabah as long as it is in accordance with the law,” he added.
