Report: Monks in anti-Najib protest at Malaysian embassy in Myanmar

A group of monks have reportedly protested against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak outside the Malaysian embassy in Myanmar over Putrajaya’s stance on the Rohingya issue.
According to news portal Rohingya Vision, some 30 monks chanted slogans against Najib outside the embassy for allegedly interfering in Myanmar’s affairs.
They held up banners which read, “Condemnation of Malaysia prime minister, don’t pressure Myanmar government”.
The protest came a day after AFP reported that Prime Minister Najib will be participating in a Rohingya solidarity protest in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow.
Najib personally confirmed this at the closing of the Umno annual general assembly today where delegates were also urged to participate in the rally.
This had sparked the ire of the Myanmar government which yesterday issued a statement criticising Malaysia.
U Zaw Htay, deputy director of the President’s Office in Myanmar, had reminded Malaysia of Asean’s non-interference policy.
“According to Asean principles, a member country does not interfere in other member countries’ internal affairs.
“We have always followed and respected this principle. We hope that the Malaysian government will continue to follow it,” he was quoted as saying.
However, Wisma Putra defended the planned protest, stressing that what was unfolding in Myanmar was a humanitarian issue that has also become a security issue for Malaysia.
More than one million Rohingya refugees have arrived in Malaysia over the years to flee persecution in Myanmar.

Malaysia does not formally recognise them as refugees and the current policy is to send them back after the resolution of the conflict in Myanmar.
The Myanmar government is facing growing international protest following reports that the killing of ethnic Rohingyas in the country had intensified.
This follows an attack on a Myanmar military outpost, which has been blamed on the Rohingyas.
