MARAN: An allocation of RM17 million has been set aside by the human resources ministry through the Social Security Organisation (Socso) to enable children of contributors to pursue their tertiary education locally and abroad this year under its Education Loan and Scholarship Scheme.
Deputy Human Resources Minister Ismail Abd Mutallib said ever since the scheme was introduced in 1997, a total of 8,490 applications were received, but only 4,597 were approved involving an allocation of RM95 million.
“This shows that the government is concerned about Socso contributors’ children and wanted to enable them to pursue tertiary education with Socso’s education loan and scholarship so that they would advance and create a better future for themselves and their families.”
He said this to reporters after visiting five welfare homes for old folks, patients of chronic diseases and persons with disabilities in Felda Jengka 1 near here today.
Meanwhile, Ismail said Socso had disbursed RM20.82 million in Ilat (invalidity) pension benefits to 2,369 contributors between 2014 and November 2016. -Mkini
