KUALA LUMPUR: DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang is playing politics with his conditional offer to join the investigation into Bank Negara Malaysia’s foreign exchange losses in the 1990s, says Azalina Othman Said.
The minister in the prime minister’s department said Kit Siang should instead come with “clean hands” if he wishes to assist the special task force set up by the Cabinet to probe the losses.
She said the task force is confined to a limited set of terms of reference that was to analyse and scrutinise the forex losses involving the bank in the 1990s, if there were any.
“The task force will then, propose the appropriate action to be taken upon completion of the preliminary investigation within the stipulated time,” she said in a statement here, yesterday.
Last week, the Prime Minister’s Office in a statement said that the Cabinet had agreed to set up a special task force to conduct a probe into the losses suffered by Bank Negara due to forex trading in the early 1990s.
Following Azalina’s statement on Feb 17 that Kit Siang should support the probe, the Gelang Patah MP was reported to have said that he was willing to help, but only if the investigation also looked into the Bumiputera Malaysia Finance (BMF) and 1MDB issues.
Meanwhile, Azalina said Kit Siang’s condition was baseless and irrelevant as 1MDB had already been investigated by a special task force comprising the auditor-general, attorney-general and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
“The task force also included the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), which also includes lawmakers from the Opposition,” she said. -FMT
