peniaga1AMPANG: A 73-year-old man today claimed the Ampang Municipal Council (MPAJ) demolished his century-old coffee shop two days ago without compensating him.
To make matters worse, Lai Thien Sang alleged that the local council tore down his outlet, ‘Kum Kee’, at the Pekan Ampang market, on Tuesday, despite informing him they would only do so on Feb 28.
“I’m old and I’m tired of looking for another job.
“How else can I earn a living? It would be different if MPAJ compensated me,” he said at a press conference organised by Ampang BN.
Present were Ampang Umno division chief Ismail Kijo and Ampang MCA division chief Low Kim Mang.
Lai said he was puzzled as to why MPAJ wanted to tear down his coffee shop.
peniaga-warga-emasHe was even more baffled that the council claimed his outlet was situated on a piece of land reserved for construction of a road.
Ismail said MPAJ must compensate any operator of a shop it wants to tear down.
In an immediate response, Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin said the Pekan Ampang market traders and shop operators had agreed to move to an alternative venue nearby, provided by the state government.
The operators, she added, also agreed to have the current site upgraded, with the Selangor government allocating RM2 million for such work.
“MPAJ demolished the shops and stalls so they can start upgrading the site, which is what the traders wanted,” she told FMT.
She said once the market was upgraded, the operators and traders could move back.
Zuraida, who is also the PKR Wanita chief, went on to slam Ismail for attempting to politicise the issue.
Ismail, she said, had no clue about what was happening in Ampang as he was not in the opposition in the PKR-led state.
“He should make inquiries if he has no idea of the plans for developing Ampang.” -FMT
