KUALA LUMPUR: PKR’s Nurul Izzah Anwar today questioned the construction of apartments, offices and a hotel on a plot of land that she claimed was reserved for the building of quarters for Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) staff.
The Lembah Pantai MP said according to a document she obtained from the Federal Territories Land and Mines Office, the land was earmarked for housing for TNB employees.
A notice board at the construction site, however, lists several projects, including a parking lot, apartments and offices to be built on the plot of land.
“City Hall, as the monitoring body, should not simply approve the construction of luxury properties.”
She said this after leading a protest by parents unhappy that such projects were being built near two schools — Sri Dasmesh International School and SK Bangsar.
The PKR vice-president urged the developer of the projects to engage the stakeholders, including the parents of the schoolchildren.
Nurul said she had been informed that the developer had held discussions with the parent-teacher association of SK Bangsar.
“We want more dialogues with the stakeholders.
“All parents, including those who send their children to Sri Dasmesh International School and myself, as the MP, should be included in such discussions with the developer.”
Nurul claimed that work on the site affected some 2,500 students in the two schools.
A mother of a Sri Dasmesh International School student, who wished to be identified as Nanthini, said the construction work was a hazard to the students.
“Dust and stones could fall from the buildings under construction next to the two schools.
“Students are also known to wander near the construction site. That is our concern.
“The students will also not be able to focus in class due to the noise from the construction work.”-FMT
