Zaid: Forex losses aside, hold inquiry on Altantuya murder

Zaid Ibrahim believes that a public inquiry into the murder of Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu would be more useful as opposed to setting up a task force to investigate Bank Negara's foreign exhange losses, which occurred more than two decades ago.
The former law minister Zaid Ibrahim also questioned Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's silence on the forex issue until now.
"Did he register unhappiness over the losses and ask for a public inquiry (in the past)?
"He took office in 2009, or seven years ago, and in all the time since then he did not say a word about the forex losses either - until now. If it was such an important issue for the country then surely he would have acted sooner," he added in a blog posting.
Based on this, Zaid claimed it is clear that the task force is an attempt to discredit former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, and former finance minister Daim Zainuddin.
Criticising cabinet ministers who gave the green light for the task force, he said: "The present Cabinet will go down in history, not just for having the largest number of ministers ever, but also for participating in a profoundly dim-witted decision."
As for the inquiry into Altantuya's murder, Zaid said it must determine the role Najib's confidant, Abdul Razak Baginda, had in the matter.
"He was charged with abetment for her murder and he was acquitted, but there was no appeal. This was and remains a case of great public interest and we still don't know what the motive behind this gruesome murder was.
"Why was Razak, an academic researcher, selected to be the agent for the purchase of the country's first submarine? Did the RM500 million fee that he received from the deal his to keep or was it for someone else? The public wants to know.
"The former attorney-general Abdul Ghani Patail is still around and it will be interesting for him to reveal why he decided not to appeal the verdict in the case against Razak.
"Was there pressure on him from above not to do so?" he asked.
In Jan 2015, the Federal Court had overturned the acquittal of two former special police operations force personnel, and upheld their convictions and death sentence for the 2006 murder.
One of them Azilah Hadri has since been imprisoned, but the other Sirul Azhar managed to flee to Australia prior to the Federal Court verdict, and remains incarcerated at an immigration detention centre there.
Zaid also hoped that Mahathir and the new ministers in cabinet, should BN be defeated in the next general election, would call for a royal commission of inquiry into this matter.
"I now wish to register my interest to be a member of that commission," he added.
On the same note, Zaid suggested another inquiry to determine how much influence the Communist Party of China has over the prime minister.
"Can we have a list of all projects and businesses that have been approved for companies from China to date?
"It is important for the public to know if allowing the Chinese from China access to all these projects compromises Malaysia's independence, security and sovereignty in any way," he added, emphasising that the posting was his personal view.- Mkini
