Azalina: Cabinet to review death sentence for drug offences

PARLIAMENT The cabinet has agreed that the mandatory death penalty for drug offences needs to be reviewed.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Azalina Othman Said told the Dewan Rakyat that the cabinet made this decision on March 1, after attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali gave them a presentation.
"The cabinet agreed and decided that amendments be made to Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act by including additional clauses to give discretionary power to the courts to bestow other sentences, besides the mandatory death penalty, in certain situations," Azalina said today.
The situations, she said, include those who are tricked or forced into being drug mules.
She added that she has directed the solicitor-general to come up with the amendments quickly so that they can be brought to Parliament once the cabinet has given the greenlight.

Opposition lawmakers lauded her announcement, with M Kulasegaran (DAP-Ipoh Barat) calling it a "revolutionary movement".
"Even though it is a baby step, it is hoped that it (will lead to) the abolishment of the death penalty altogether," Kulasegaran said.
Hanipa Maidin (Amanah-Sepang) also asked if there would be a moratorium for those already sentenced to death for drug offences.
Azalina said the cabinet has yet to discuss a moratorium for those sentenced.- Mkini
