Bersatu Youth chief mulls giving up politics for Oxford

Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman is mulling to quit active politics and accept an offer to further his studies at Oxford University.
When contacted, Syed Saddiq said he was feeling exceptionally guilty about leaving as the Masters Degree in Public Policy is scheduled to start in September, coinciding with rumours of when the 14th general election will be called.
"I have not made any decisions. It is definitely not an easy decision.
"The next step now would be to talk to (Bersatu chairperson former premier) Dr Mahathir (Mohamad) and (Bersatu president) Muhyiddin (Yassin)," he said.
Syed Saddiq said the Bersatu top leadership had previously said he would "definitely be running" in GE14. However, he added that it was too early to reveal any further details.
In a Facebook post yesterday, Syed Saddiq had shared a copy of the acceptance letter he received from Oxford, describing it as being a dream offer.
"From the comments on my Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, most of them have encouraged me to leave (and accept the offer).
"But I don't think they know how much I have gone through and sacrificed to join politics," he told Malaysiakini.
"I need to really think about this.
"This is a dream offer but this year is also not just a random year," he said.
On whether there was a possibility to defer his admission, Syed Saddiq said it is an available option but typically granted only under the most exceptional of circumstances.
The 25-year old has since January led a line-up of 21 exco leaders and 12 state chiefs under the Armada youth wing.
At the time, he said the Armada wing is open to members aged between 15 and 35, representing some 40 per cent of total Bersatu registered members.- Mkini
