Wan Azizah: Where’s the promised welfare bill for retired cops?

Opposition leader Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has reminded the government of its promise to introduce legislation for the welfare of retired cops.
Wan Azizah’s reminder coincided with the Royal Malaysian Police’s (PDRM) 210th anniversary today.
“Based on media reports, the deputy home minister had on Feb 7, 2014 said the government was studying a draft law to better manage the welfare of former and retired police officers.
“But to date, nothing has been heard of the draft. I urge the government to expedite the public consultation programme including engaging the opposition to draft a law that can improve the welfare of former and retired police officers,” she said in a statement today.
Wan Azizah said the welfare of police officers and their families should be safeguarded and improved.
“The salary and allowances of junior police officers should also be reviewed and rationalised in accordance with increasing inflation,” she said.

On Thursday, Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed told Parliament that police officers who take up loan from illegal sources risk being sacked from the force in a bid to protect the good name of the police.
This was amid high debt problems among junior police officers.
Wan Azizah also emphasised the need to improve the police force, including curbing the incidences of deaths in custody.
One such solution, she said, was the introduction of an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC).
She also urged police to expedite probes into a series of recent kidnappings.- Mkini
