PPBM DEPUTY’S COMPANY UNDER SCRUTINY FOR ALLEGED GRAFT OVER 2003 TELEKOM DEAL

(MMO) – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is looking into a 2003 fibre optic supply deal between Telekom Bhd and a company belonging to Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir for alleged improprieties.
MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations) Datuk Azam Baki said the probe was launched after complaints were filed with the anti-graft body claiming power abuse in the deal’s tender process, Utusan Malaysia reported today.
“We had just received [the complaint] so we will look into it.
“If there are elements of power abuse and corruption we will investigate,” he was quoted saying.
Mukhriz is the son of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who was the prime minister at the time when the fibre optic supply deal in question took place.
Dr Mahathir quit Umno to form Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) last year after a fallout with his handpicked successor, current prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Mukhriz was sacked from Umno for insubordination. He is currently PPBM deputy president.
