ROSMAH A ‘SACRIFICIAL LAMB’? CARELESS OR NOT, UMNO MAN LIKENS PM’S WIFE TO AN ANIMAL IN VITRIOLIC ATTACK AGAINST U.S. DOJ, OPPOSITION

An Umno division leader has censured the opposition for training its guns on Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s wife Rosmah Mansor regarding the US Department of Justice’s (DOJ) latest civil forfeiture suit in relations to 1MDB.
Syed Ali Alhabshee regretted that certain quarters with vested interests are implicating Rosmah in the case.
“When something is inaccurate, it means that it is false. So why spread an untruth, this is slander.
“This is part of the slander by Umno’s enemies. They are making the prime minister’s wife a sacrificial lamb to bring down a democratically elected government,” he said in a blog post.
The Cheras Umno division chief said Rosmah, like all citizens of Malaysia, deserved justice and the freedom to defend herself.
“From a legal perspective, the prime minister’s wife has not been proven guilty (of any wrongdoing) in this matter. This shows there is a vile attempt to tarnish her good name,” he added.
DOJ did not mention Rosmah
Syed Ali also criticised Parti Pribumi Malaysia Bersatu (Bersatu) Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, who called on youths returning to their hometowns for Hari Raya to talk about the alleged US$27.3 million pink diamond necklace to their relatives.
The Umno leader pointed out that the DOJ’s 251-page suit did not mention Rosmah’s name, but referred to a person identified as the “wife of Malaysian Official 1 (MO1)”.
“So how can the opposition give the impression that Rosmah is involved when the status of the individual portrayed (in the documents) has not been ascertained?” he asked.
Accusing the opposition of deliberately twisting the issue, he said: “Rosmah and Najib’s names were not mentioned in the (DOJ) documents. This means they are not subject to investigation. It is just a questionable presumption.”
Syed Ali also noted that Najib has denied the allegation of misusing public funds while attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali also cleared the prime minister of any wrongdoing.
In last Thursday’s filing, the DOJ alleged that a portion of the US$620 million which Najib had claimed to have returned to his “Saudi royalty donor who gave him RM2.6 billion” was used by businessperson Jho Low to acquire the pink diamond necklace and 27 other jewellery items for the wife of MO1.
The DOJ claimed the items were purchased using funds misappropriated from 1MDB.
DOJ’s insinuating it
Yesterday, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Abdul Rahman Dahlan mentioned Rosmah by name when quizzed on whether the DOJ had unfairly targeted the prime minister’s wife since it was not seeking to seize the 28 jewellery items.
“You (DOJ) mock and give the impression that Rosmah and the diamond did something wrong,” he had told a press conference.Following the first DOJ filing last year, Abdul Rahman had confirmed that MO1 was Najib but argued that since the prime minister was not named, the latter was not being investigated.
As for the latest filing, the DOJ is seeking to seize the US$10 million in jewellery items which Jho Low purportedly purchased using stolen 1MDB money for Australian model Miranda Kerr and his mother, apart from a slew of properties, movie rights and posters as well as a superyacht.
Pro-government supporters have accused the opposition of having a hand in the DOJ suit, which the opposition has denied.
Over the weekend, a law firm representing Rosmah also warned of legal action against those who make unfounded allegations against their client.
