KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan Sabah has invited government servants to join the party in response to Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Mansor’s call to teachers to join Umno recently.
Warisan Youth chief Azis Jamman said government servants, especially those in Sabah, are welcome to hold posts in the opposition party.
“They can be branch chiefs in Warisan because Tengku Adnan has confirmed that government servants can participate in politics.
“He has opened the floodgates. So, take this opportunity to become the first agents of change, to become the pivotal Sabah generation to remove Umno from the state,” he said on Facebook.
Tengku Adnan, who was at Sekolah Kebangsaan Putrajaya Presint 14(1) in Putrajaya to give away prizes to winners of an Umno-themed competition, in his speech, openly urged teachers to join Umno.
Chief secretary to the government Ali Hamsa later said he had no problem with Tengku Adnan calling on the teachers at the school to celebrate Umno’s contributions to Malaya’s independence.
The explicit display of politics in the school event drew sharp criticisms from some sections of the public who accused Tengku Adnan of turning the teachers and students into political tools.
On March 26, Education Minister Mahdzir Khalid advised teachers who supported the opposition and criticised the government to quit their profession.
Mahdzir said although such teachers were exercising their democratic rights, they breached their service regulations by criticising the government.
Meanwhile, Warisan secretary-general Loretto Padua Jr today announced the line-up for its state men’s and women’s youth wings as well as divisional heads.
Padua Jr also announced the party had received 100,000 new membership applications from various ethnic groups and professional backgrounds, with 20% of them coming from youths.
“This shows the confidence that Sabah youths have in our party,” he said.
“Also, 55% of the membership applications are from the east coast and the rest from the west coast.” -FMT
