Nephew backs out from facing uncle Hadi in Marang, citing ‘tensions’

GE14 | Marang Amanah chief Miqdad Zakaria, who was slated to contest against his uncle PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang in Marang for the 14th general election, has withdrawn his candidacy.
In a statement directed to Marang Amanah, Miqdad said his decision was to ease tensions in the division.
"I really appreciate your efforts and sacrifice, but for the good of us all, this agenda to contest has to be cancelled," he said.
The announcement came on the same day that Hadi confirmed he would be defending the parliamentary seat.
According to Miqdad, from the moment Marang Amanah was founded, he had never been interested in contesting, despite there being attempts to convince him otherwise.
"You all know the strong reason why I rejected it, it is because Marang Amanah was founded to divide 'indoctrinated minds'," he added.
He said the division had already achieved victory, with those who would not even talk to them in the past now affording them a smile.
Miqdad urged the division to also focus their efforts on "defeating BN and 'Dot Dot'," believed to be a reference to PAS.
Hadi first contested the Marang seat in 1986. He won the seat five out of seven times, including in the last general election in 2013 by a 5,124-vote majority.
PAS is slated to announce its candidates for all seats nationwide on April 19.  Mkini
