Anwar on Dr M's 'blemished' record: You can't erase the past, but...

In the run-up to the historic May 9 general election, Malaysians witnessed an unprecedented realignment of political forces, which included Dr Mahathir Mohamad forming an alliance with his heir-apparent-turned-nemesis-turned heir apparent again, Anwar Ibrahim.
During their two decades of animosity, Anwar had accused Mahathir of being a despot responsible for numerous misdeeds, corruption and abuse of power.
Quizzed on this, the Pakatan Harapan de facto leader replied: “You can’t erase the past, but you can be reasonable enough to chart a new future.”
Speaking to Arab News, Anwar, who is slated to succeed Mahathir as prime minister, said the latter
had made amends for his past wrongdoings and was willing to move on for the sake of the nation.
He also pointed out that saving the nation was more important than his past differences with Mahathir.
“The elections or the struggle is not just about me — it is about what we can do to save the country. If it means working with Mahathir, that is fine with me,” he added.
'Najib treated better than me'
Anwar also commented on former premier Najib Abdul Razak's claim that the Harapan government is not treating him well with regard to the investigation into 1MDB.
“Personally, I went through that. I understand the predicament.
“But he is being treated well as far as I am concerned, far better than the first few weeks that I had to be hauled up and imprisoned. Nevertheless, whatever request he wants to make, he should make it,” he added.
Anwar also stressed on the importance of upholding the rule of law and that it should also extend to the 1MDB case.
“The judiciary cannot be compromised. The trial should be handled by a senior judge with impeccable credentials,” he said. - Mkini
