ARAU: Bintong assemblyman Azlan Man was today sworn in as Perlis menteri besar for a second consecutive term.
Azlan took his oath of office before the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail, in a ceremony at the Istana Arau here today.
This puts an end to the Perlis menteri besar impasse, which lasted for a good two weeks after the 14th general election.
Until yesterday, Perlis was the only state in the country without a menteri besar despite Barisan Nasional (BN) securing a two-thirds majority, winning 10 out of the 15 state seats it contested.
Pakatan Harapan (PH) won three seats (Kuala Perlis, Sena and Indera Kayangan), while PAS secured the remaining two (Sanglang and Guar Sanji).
In the 2013 general election, Azlan contested and won the Pauh state seat. He was subsequently sworn in as menteri besar.
In the May 9 polls, he contested the Bintong state seat, winning with a slim majority of 847 votes in a three-way fight against PH and PAS.
It is believed that the delay in nomination of the new menteri besar followed a dispute between a faction led by Perlis BN chairman Shahidan Kassim and another group of elected representatives led by Azlan. -FMT
