Ruler's fear: Perlis MB will be a puppet if he's Shahidan's brother

The Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail has expressed concern and fear that if a Perlis menteri besar closely linked to state Umno chief Shahidan Kassim is be appointed, he would be a "puppet controlled by external factors".
Referring to Shahidan's brother Ismail Kassim, the Tuanku said government secrets must remain within the cabinet but this may not remain so if they were brothers.
"What is discussed in the government should be kept within the cabinet but if there are brothers, information will get out.
"If Shahidan wanted the post, he should have contested a state seat, but he did not," the Tuanku added during the swearing-in ceremony of Azlan Man as the menteri besar of Perlis.
Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin said his suspicions were 100 percent confirmed when nine BN assemblypersons were not present at the swearing-in ceremony at the state palace this morning "as they were pulled by an outsider" to go to Kuala Lumpur.
Speaking at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today, Shahidan, who is Perlis BN chairperson, called on Azlan Man, who was as Perlis menteri besar this morning, to be sacked with immediate effect.
Shahidan (photo) said Azlan should not have accepted the appointment, claiming that he did not have the support of the majority of the assemblypersons in the Perlis state assembly.
The Raja of Perlis warned: "They (the nine assemblypersons) did not show any respect for this ceremony and if we allow this to continue, more than this would happen."
His Royal Highness said that such an incident has never happened in Perlis or in the other states.
He noted that the appointment of Azlan as the menteri besar had taken nearly two weeks due to the personal interests of certain quarters.
"I do not wish to mention names but many of them were absent today. I do not know why they were not here today as the invitations had been sent two days earlier.
"They were flown to Kuala Lumpur yesterday. I have received reports but the ceremony will go on, with or without them," said the state ruler.
Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin recalled that there was a similar incident in 2008 and it took two weeks to form the state government.
He was hoping that soon after the May 9 general election, the MB could be appointed to form the state government and line-up his state executive councillors so that several issues could be resolved and the state's development could be put back on track.
"But instead, this state, although small, has another agenda. We must remember, Perlis is now controlled by the opposition (BN), more problems compared to the past may crop up from time to time," he warned.
'We have to rely on the federal government'
He was referring to the state's income, which would now be under the federal government led by Pakatan Harapan.
"We are always in deficit and we have to rely on the federal government for help, the same goes for development issues, for which we need federal assistance.
"However the state assemblypersons do not think this is important. What is important to them is the post of MB," said the Tuanku.
He reminded that in the State Constitution, the decision to appoint the MB lies in his power but the person should obtain the support of the majority in the House.
Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin said he has spoken to each assemblyperson and asked if any of them could hold the MB's post if appointed.
"Most of them said they could not. Only two or three were brave enough to say they could, so I asked who was most qualified, and a name was given to me.
"But it does not mean I would accept it as the name given is only a recommendation, not an authorisation," the Tuanku added.
Out of the names shortlisted, the ruler added, he had picked the former MB as he wanted there to be continuity so that the state could be developed accordingly. - Mkini
