Bersatu only nets ex-rep after no-show by Umno assemblyperson

The Kelantan lawmaker speculated to quit Umno did not show up at a Bersatu event to welcome new members into its fold today.
Regardless, the Hijrah 2.0 (Crossover 2.0) event went ahead as planned, with 500 Umno grassroots members quitting the party and moving over to Bersatu.
The no-show also finally put to bed speculation that Gual Ipoh assemblyperson Mohd Bakri Mustapha was the mystery Umno lawmaker agitating to leave the party.
Yesterday, Bakri denied wanting to cross over, and said such speculation was meant to ruin his name and reputation.
According to Kelantan Bersatu deputy chief Sazmi Miah, there were discussions with a number of Umno lawmakers intending to leave the party, but none had made the final decision.
“This is God’s will. Maybe not today, but someday. They (the Umno lawmakers in question) cannot keep it in.
“Today, we had 500 Umno grassroots members crossing over,” he said at the event.
Although the event saw no current Umno assemblyperson joining Bersatu, former Bukit Tuku assemblyperson Mohd Zain Ismail was among the 500 making the jump.
Meanwhile, Muhammad Zul Apis Baharum, who rose to fame after being accused of insulting Johor crown prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim last year, also joined the party.
Zul Apis, popularly known as Mat Tere, had been remanded in Johor for the alleged insult, but was released and sent back to Kelantan on Tunku Ismail’s instruction.
“I, Mohd Zul Apis, declare that I am leaving Umno, and will fight with Bersatu,” he said when asked to speak at Hijrah 2.0 today.
Also present at the event were Bersatu deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir and Kelantan Bersatu chairperson Kamaruddin Md Noor. -Mkini
