Rural Development Minister Rina Harun says a total of RM66 million had initially been allocated for hardcore poor housing projects this year.
KOTA KINABALU: The rural development ministry will add another RM2 million to the existing funds for hardcore poor housing projects (PPRT) in Sabah.
Its minister Rina Harun said there was about RM18 million left from the total budget for Sabah’s PPRT projects.
“This means there will be RM20 million to be used for construction and repairs.
“The total allocation until June this year was RM66 million, and the balance left is RM18 million,” she said after a courtesy call to Chief Minister Shafie Apdal at his office here today.
She said the ministry has allocated RM3.8 billion for rural development projects nationwide this year, with 26% going to Sabah.
The RM66 million allocation is intended for the construction of 252 new units at a cost of more than RM17 million and 3,259 units for refurbishment, involving a cost of over RM48 million..
Asked whether there were projects from the previous administration that had been put on hold, Rina said: “We have to look at our financial standing now… there are some that we are reviewing but others we will continue.”
She said “people-centric” projects would continue and the government was willing to consider giving more based on the needs of the people.
“We know we have challenges but we must balance it out for the welfare of the people,” she said.
Shafie, in welcoming the efforts by Rina and her ministry, said the state government would continue to work closely with the federal government.
“There are pressing needs for development, especially in rural areas.
“I am confident the rural development ministry needs fresh ideas and new people to effectively assist Malaysians in the rural areas. The ministry must be able to execute new programmes and plans to help the people,” he said. - FMT
