PETALING JAYA: Our athletes are national heroes and heroines regardless of what they wear, says Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.
The Youth and Sports Minister said that he would meet with Terengganu Youth Development, Sports and Non-Government Development Committee chairman Wan Sukairi Wan Abdullah to get a full picture over the proposed guidelines on syariah-compliant attire and conduct for athletes.
"My stance on this is clear. Athletes are our national heroes and heroines, regardless of what they wear.
"They sacrifice so much for Malaysia.
"I've spoken to him (Wan Sukairi) before when there was news about this and he gave me his commitment that he would 'advise' not 'coerce or force'," Syed Saddiq said on Tuesday (Sept 3).
It was reported that the Terengganu government is drafting guidelines on syariah-compliant attire and conduct for athletes.
The state government was now taking in feedback on the matter from sports associations, academics, and the state mufti, and would not rush into implementing the move just yet.
Bernama reported that Wan Sukairi named rhythmic gymnastics and women's gymnastics as two of the sports that exposed the athletes’ bodies and the movements were considered indecent for spectators.
"There is no compromise for these sports (rhythmic gymnastics and women's gymnastics) as they display indecent movements, and unless the audience comprises only women, then maybe we will allow them.
"Even then, it would still be against the respective sports’ governing body regulations,” Wan Sukairi was quoted as saying. - Star
