Decision on Uggah’s suit against Sarawak PKR man tomorrow

Deputy CM Douglas Uggah Embas (left) is taking action against PKR state secretary Vernon Kedit for allegedly defaming him on a media WhatsApp chat group.
KUCHING: The Kuching High Court will deliver its ruling at 11.30am tomorrow on the defamation suit by Deputy Chief Minister Douglas Uggah Embas against PKR state secretary Vernon Kedit.
Uggah had filed a suit against Kedit, who was then PKR Sarawak publicity chief, last year for allegedly calling him a “liar” and “traitor” following the amendment of the Sarawak Land Code.
It was reported that Kedit had uttered the remarks when commenting on the alleged imperfections in the amended Sarawak Land Code, particularly on the mechanisms to convert native customary rights (NCR) land to Native Territorial Domain (NTD) in a media WhatsApp chat group.
Uggah later described Kedit’s remarks as a “personal attack” that is “libellous” and “slanderous”.
High Court Judge Ravinthran N Paramaguru had asked lawyers from both sides to discuss the damages and legal costs.
However, the lawyers failed to reach a mutual agreement on the matter.
“We’ll let the court decide (on the damages and legal costs) tomorrow,” Uggah’s lawyer Sim Hui Chuang said after the proceedings today.
Kedit, who was not present during the proceedings today, was represented by his lawyer, Desmond Kho. - FMT
