EC receives Federal Court notification on Kimanis seat

EC chairman Azhar Azizan Harun says the commission will meet to discuss a by-election for the Kimanis parliamentary seat.

PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) has received the Federal Court’s official notification on its decision to declare the result of the Kimanis parliamentary seat in Sabah null and void.

As such, EC chairman Azhar Azizan Harun said, a by-election must be held within 60 days from the date of the notification in accordance with Article 54 (1) of the Federal Constitution.

“An official notification has been sent to the speaker of the Dewan Rakyat today,” Azhar said in a statement.

He said the EC would hold a special meeting to discuss the by-election.

On Dec 2, the Federal Court upheld the election court’s ruling on Aug 16 that Anifah Aman’s victory in the Kimanis parliamentary seat in last year’s general election was null and void.

The court concurred with the election court’s ruling that there were discrepancies in the conduct of the election process by the EC. - FMT
