KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court was today told that the road tax and insurance for 20 vehicles belonging to former deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi amounting RM107,509.55 was paid in 2015 using funds from Yayasan Akalbudi.
Allianz General Insurance agent Ahmad Izhan Abd Rashid, 40, said the payment was received through three Affin Bank cheques belonging to the foundation from Ahmad Zahid’s personal assistant, Mazlina Mazlan.
Ahmad, the 14th prosecution witness, said a cheque dated Jan 22, 2015 was for RM24,980.55, another dated April 15 was for RM43,645, and a third dated Sept 22 was for RM38,884.
He said the cheques were made to him because he had to pay for the road tax in cash to the Road Transport Department (JPJ).
A sum would also be deposited in the current account of Maya Consultant Services, belonging to him, for payment of the car insurance premiums,” Ahmad said when reading out his witness statement during examination-in-chief by deputy public prosecutor Lee Keng Fatt.
Zahid faces 47 charges – 12 for criminal breach of trust (CBT), eight for corruption and 27 for money laundering – involving tens of millions of ringgit belonging to Yayasan Akalbudi.
Ahmad, who has been an agent for the insurance company since 2006, said Zahid took up 39 car insurance policies from him for 20 vehicles, including 18 luxury cars such as the BMW X5, Mini Cooper S, BMW 320i (A) and Mercedes Benz CLS350 and a BMW R1200 GS motorcycle.
He said he would go to Zahid’s house at Country Heights in Kajang, Selangor, to hand over the insurance policies and road tax discs.
Questioned by Zahid’s lawyer Hamidi Mohd Noh, Ahmad agreed that the ink used to sign and write the particulars on the three cheques was not the same.
He also agreed with Hamidi that the cheques were presigned.
Re-examined by Lee, Ahmad said he knew the three checks were presigned as Mazlina had told him that she would get Zahid to sign the blank cheques, and she would fill the necessary particulars, to speed up the matter.
Earlier, the 13th witness, Fang Suat Lim, who is the manager of the Allianz General Insurance branch at Wisma Allianz on Jalan Gereja here, told the court that Zahid took up four types of insurance policies – private car, motorcycle, ‘enhanced road warrior’ and ‘bike warrior’ – from her.
Fang said the nominees for the insurance policies were Zahid, his wife Hamidah Khamis and their children, Nurulizwani, Nurulhidayah and Ahmad Syafiq Hazieq.
