KUCHING: The High Court here today ruled in favour of Deputy Chief Minister Douglas Uggah Embas in his defamation suit against Sarawak PKR secretary Vernon Kedit.
Judge Ravinthran N Paramaguru ordered Kedit to pay Uggah RM200,000 in damages and RM40,000 in legal fees.
Uggah filed the suit against Kedit last year, accusing him of calling him a liar and traitor following the amendment of the Sarawak Land Code.
It was reported that Kedit, who was Sarawak PKR publicity chief at the time, had uttered the remarks in a media WhatsApp chat group when commenting on alleged imperfections in the amended code, particularly on the mechanisms to convert native customary rights land to native territorial domain.
Uggah described Kedit’s remarks as libellous and slanderous, adding that they were a personal attack.
The High Court today also granted an injunction barring Kedit from using similar words against Uggah.
Kedit’s lawyer Desmond Kho said he would seek instruction on whether to proceed with an appeal. - FMT
