DAP challenged to speak up for Sarawak’s oil and gas rights

KUCHING: SUPP youth chief Michael Tiang has challenged Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen to repeat a statement he made two years ago that it is illegal for Putrajaya to deny Sarawak its rights over its oil and gas.
Speaking to FMT, Tiang accused DAP of changing its tune after becoming part of the ruling federal government.
He said Chong and his party had done nothing to show support for the state’s determination to enforce its autonomy and claim its rights, such as in its fight against Petronas over a 5% sales tax on petroleum products.
“The Pakatan Harapan government is taking away our rights over oil and gas as well as its profits, which is illegal,” he said.
“I therefore challenge Chong to repeat his statement at the state legislative assembly in 2018 that it is illegal for the federal government to take away our oil rights, our oil money and our gas money.”
He told Chong to use his position as a deputy minister to advise the prime minister to do everything necessary to restore Sarawak’s constitutional rights over oil and gas.
“This is the right time for Chong to speak up for Sarawak in Putrajaya,” he said.
“He is in the right position and DAP has the necessary political influence to do so. There is no reason for him to be so silent.”
