SERENDAH: Nomination day for Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia branch and division party polls needed to be postponed as there is a dire need to clean up the membership registry first, says Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“The registration of members faced a lot of difficulties.

“We found members in one place but their registration was made in another place.

“We have to correct that,” he said after visiting the new rail depot of Dhaya Maju Infrastructure (Asia) Sdn Bhd (DMIA) here yesterday.

Dr Mahathir, who is also Bersatu chairman, said that candidates would also be vetted before they were allowed to contest as the party was looking for people of a “certain calibre”.

“Bankrupts cannot be candidates,” he said, adding that the party doesn’t want opportunists as well.

“According to the rules, former Umno members (without a one-year membership) cannot contest but there will be special cases

which we will consider,” said Dr Mahathir.

On another issue, he said that the party would wait for the full details before deciding on any action on its members who were arrested in a drug party.

Dr Mahathir said no one in Bersatu was above the law.

“If anybody breaks the law, no matter who, even if I break the law, I will go to jail,” he added.

He was commenting on the arrest of a Selangor state representative, who is also from Bersatu, together with 16 others during a raid on drug party in the wee hours of Sunday. - Star
