Cops, army to enforce social distancing at Selayang market

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | The government has decided to deploy the police and the armed forces to enforce social distancing at the Selayang wholesale and wet markets.
Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said despite a warning yesterday, market-goers were still not observing social distancing.
"They were still crowding the market, not following the SOP regarding physical distancing of one metre and so on.
"The (special ministers') meeting (on the movement control order) has decided today to place police and army personnel at the market to ensure compliance," he said at a press conference in Putrajaya today.
The government zoomed in on the market after there were eight reported Covid-19 cases from the site.
Ismail said he hoped that with security forces present, social distancing at the Selayang markets will improve just as the Air Itam market in Penang did after going through a similar situation.
Meanwhile, on a separate matter, Ismail warned traders nationwide not to blatantly hike up prices.
He said the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry is constantly monitoring the price of goods.
He urged the public to report any errant traders to the ministry.
"This is so strict action can be taken, we will not let anyone take advantage of the MCO," he said.
The senior minister also assured that there is sufficient supply of food in the country, and that the public need not worry.
He also reiterated that everyone in the agriculture chain or production is allowed to operate during the MCO. - Mkini
