Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | The Bentong district police are taking precautions against Covid-19 after a man detained there died after suffering from shortness of breath.
Police said they had detained the man, aged 30, on April 2 for alleged theft. His body was sent to Bentong Hospital where a Covid-19 test will be conducted.
According to Bentong district police chief Yusof Unis, police personnel on duty found that the victim experienced breathing difficulty at about 12.50am today and summoned for an ambulance.
"However, as soon as the ambulance arrived at the lock-up, they found that the man has died.
"He was pronounced dead at 1.10am," he said when contacted this evening.
Malaysiakini contacted Yusof after learning about the victim's death from activist group Eliminating Deaths And Abuse In Custody Together (Edict), which tweeted about the incident.
Yusof said they are still investigating the cause of death, but a post-mortem on the body would wait until health authorities conclude if the victim had Covid-19.
"For now, we have opened an investigation under sudden death," he added.
Yusof said, for now, police have isolated several other detainees who were in the same cell with the victim as a precautionary measure.
As of noon today, Malaysia has recorded a total of 3,662 Covid-19 positive cases, with a cumulative death toll of 61. - Mkini
