Former Permodalan Nasional Bhd chairperson Abdul Wahid Omar is set to be Bursa Malaysia Bhd’s new chairperson, according to The Edge.
The business daily quoted sources in its report today that he is tipped to chair Bursa Malaysia.
When the daily reached out to him, the Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer declined to comment over the matter.
A veteran in the country’s corporate community, Wahid has held multiple positions in the government and government-linked corporations (GLCs), which are commercial bank Malayan Banking Bhd and national telco Telekom Malaysia Bhd.
For three years from June 2013, Wahid was a minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of economic planning, before being appointed as Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) chairperson in August 2016.
Following the historic general election in May 2018, he stepped down from the board of PNB a month later, with former Bank Negara governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz taking over the helm from him.
After his stint in PNB, he was appointed as Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia chairperson and was scheduled to hold the post from Nov 1, 2018, until Oct 31, next year.
Earlier today, The Edge reported that Bursa Malaysia’s incumbent non-executive chairperson, Shireen Ann Zaharah Muhiudeen, was asked to step down due to governance issues.
Speaking to the business daily, the Securities Commission (SC) confirmed that the Finance Minister Zafrul Abdul Aziz decided to revoke Shireen’s appointment following discussions with the capital markets regulator.
“As provided for in the Capital Markets and Services Act 2007 (CMSA), the power to appoint and remove a public interest director and chairperson of Bursa Malaysia rests with the minister of finance.
"In exercising this power, the minister consults with the SC before arriving at his decision,” the statutory body told the business daily. - Mkini
