Bukit Aman probes if cops in cahoots with Sg Buloh gambling den operators

Malaysiakini

Bukit Aman is looking into the possible involvement of Sungai Buloh police officers in protecting gambling dens in the district.
This came after a burger stall chain owner, whose videos went viral for exposing the gambling dens at Bandar Baru Sungai Buloh, claimed that certain individuals had questioned his burger stall staff if they had made a complaint against the gambling dens.
He also claimed that the raids on the premises only led to a brief closure before they resumed operations.
Bukit Aman Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS) director Zamri Yahya said they have launched an investigation into the matter.
"Bukit Aman is conducting a probe into the possibility of police officers at IPD Sungai Buloh being involved in protecting gambling dens in the area," he told Malaysiakini.
Zamri said the police will contact the complainant to obtain more information.
"We are still trying to verify certain information from the complainant. We want to know specific details such as to whom he complained to at IPD Sungai Buloh and Bukit Aman JIPS, as alleged.
"This information is crucial for our investigation," he added.
Mohd Asri Hamid, 42, had complained about the authorities' alleged inaction against gambling dens in the area, which he claimed the locals were well aware of.
He said that after the district police said his revelations on the matter were inaccurate and could be defamatory as well as tarnish the police's image.
Mohd Asri had recorded Facebook live videos showing gambling dens and purported illegal stalls operating along Jalan Besar Bandar Baru Sungai Buloh, claiming no action had been taken by the police and the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) against them.
He was upset after MBSA seized his burger stalls but not others, labelling the action as double standards.
The police and MBSA have filed police reports against Mohd Asri on the accusations.
"I am from this area and the locals are aware of the existence of the gambling dens. However, it is the police's right to deny it," Mohd Asri told Harian Metro.
On the police report against him, the Persatuan Pengguna Islam Malaysia member said he would cooperate with the police.
He added that had been in touch with the MACC concerning the activities.
In venting out his frustration, he said: "MBSA had seized two of my burger stalls, although we were not opened (during the operation). There were many other stall operators, but no similar action was taken against them.
"An Aceh seller had even set up a tent at the roadside and sold smuggled cigarettes. There were also several other gambling dens, but action was only taken against us."
Mohd Asri claimed to have applied for licences to operate his burger stalls several times from the local council but his applications were declined.
Sungai Buloh District police chief Shafa'aton Abu Bakar had said that the police raided six gambling dens in the area.
In one of the raids, she said they had arrested two Bangladeshi nationals and seized five tablets, a modem and RM114 in cash, while the other premises were inoperational during the raids.
Responding to the viral video, which garnered almost five million views, Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador had said the police would not compromise against any party involved in gambling activities. - Mkini
