PARLIAMENT | The Perikatan Nasional government currently has no intention to amend the Federal Constitution in order to set term limits for the prime minister's post.
This was expressed by de facto Law Minister Takiyuddin Hassan in the Dewan Rakyat today.
"In this matter (PM term limits), currently, no (intention to amend)," he said.
Takiyuddin was responding to a query by Sim Tze Tzin (Harapan-Bayan Baru) who wanted the government to explain why it withdrew a bill to set a two-term limit for the prime minister post.
The bill had been tabled by Pakatan Harapan and was a key promise in their election manifesto.
Takiyuddin had earlier cited the standing orders, which do not require the government to provide any reason to withdraw a bill.
He also poked fun at the bill, which he said was tabled by a prime minister who had served for 22 years and 22 months, in reference to Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Yesterday, Communications and Multimedia Minister Saifuddin Abdullah said the cabinet had unanimously decided to withdraw the bill.
He assured that there are many other items on PN's reform agenda and most of them are still on the table. - Mkini
