Support letter: Parents do what they think is best, says deputy minister's son

Malaysiakini

Deputy Defence Minister Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz’s son Ikmal Hazlan has said he had a “different point of view” from his father, though he was “grateful” for the intent behind his father's letter of support.
Ikmal Hisham had previously written a letter of support to Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob for his son’s bid to become a board member of Pharmaniaga Bhd, which is owned by the defence ministry’s Armed Forces Fund Board (LTAT).
“Sometimes parents do things for you that they think is best for you.
“As children, we know they mean well, though standing from a different point of view, and can only be grateful for their intent,” said Ikmal Hazlan (above) on Twitter today.
He was responding to a news article where his father expressed regret for having written the letter of support.
The deputy minister also said he remembers writing a follow-up letter asking for it to be cancelled.
“I regret what happened, I know there were weaknesses. God willing, I will correct it later. That letter was old, from June 5.
“As far as I remember, I wrote another letter, in which I asked the minister (Ismail Sabri) to retract my suggested request and informed the minister to cancel it.
“In fact, I also informed the LTAT not to appoint (my son) to any board,” Ikmal Hisham said.
Ismail Sabri Yaakob
Previously, Ismail Sabri confirmed that he had received the letter of support but claimed he did not proceed with the appointment due to nepotism concerns despite initially scribbling the word “support” on the letter.
A copy of the support letter had gone viral on social media yesterday.
The letter addressed to Ismail Sabri was dated June 5 and contained a handwritten note by the minister in which he minuted to the chairperson of the LTAT of his nod to the suggestion to appoint Ikmal’s son.
Pharmaniaga’s majority shareholder is Boustead Holdings. The LTAT, in turn, holds a majority stake in Boustead as well as a smaller stake in Pharmaniaga. - Mkini
