SABAH POLLS | As campaigning starts for the Sabah polls, Libaran Umno has evaded a possible rift as over 20 branch chiefs who yesterday objected to BN's N51 Sungai Manila candidate Mokran Ingkat have now pledged their support to ensure his victory.
When met at the Libaran BN command centre for the launch of its polls machinery, Umno Rancangan Lubuh branch chief Hassan Kibing (above) said he has gotten over his anger and was now ready to support Mokran.
"Today I can say I am okay.
"Most important the leaders on top, they must ensure good leadership so we in BN and Umno, we will be strong," he told Malaysiakini.
Hassan was among 24 Umno branch chiefs in Sungai Manila who yesterday demanded party leaders reconsider Mokran's candidacy and instead field former Sabah chief minister Musa Aman in the new seat.
"But now I can accept it. I am a BN man, so I will accept. I support BN, from a long time ago, I support BN.
"Because there is already a decision that Tan Sri did not want to cooperate (with BN), so now we from all the 25 branches will unanimously support BN's candidates, particularly in Sungai Manila," said Hassan.
At a press conference after the launch, Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob said initial objections are a normal occurrence, expressing confidence that true BN supporters will eventually accept any decision made by the party.
Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin yesterday reiterated that Musa, a former Sungai Sibuga assemblyperson for 24 years, did not offer himself to contest as a BN candidate this time around.
Libaran Umno chief Suhaimi Nasir, who is also BN's candidate for Gum-Gum, similarly said the issue has been resolved after his meeting with Hassan and the other disgruntled grassroots leaders.
Earlier today, Musa ended speculation over his next political move after a no- show at the Dewan Serbaguna Libaran or any other nomination centre in Sabah. - Mkini
